Dolphins Revamp Roster
By Michael Williams (4/3/2007)
Miami Dolphins are in overdrive. General manager Randy Mueller has not wasted any time in overhauling the Dolphins roster.
Vonnie Holliday, the defensive tackle, was the only one of the 15 unrestricted free agents that the team re-signed before the start of the free agent signing period. The Dolphins have let go of veteran players. Defensive end Kevin Carter and guards Jeno James, Seth McKinney and Bennie Anderson were released by the Dolphins. Quarterback Joey Harrington was released after the Dolphins were unsuccessful in finding a trade partner for him.
Carter was released since he and the Dolphins did not reach an agreement on a contract restructuring. Carter is a 13 year veteran who, in the last two seasons, had started all the 32 games for the team. It is expected that Math Roth will take over Carter’s position in the starting lineup. Roth was a second round pick in the 2005 draft.
Last season Dolphins guards were injury prone. McKinney, Anderson, James and Joe Toledo were injured last season and together they missed a total of 53 games. Toledo was the fourth round pick in the 2006 draft. James had two surgeries in 2006 on his right knee and he was set to earn $2.5 million. While McKinney was slated to earn $4 million and Anderson $2.1 million which ended up inflating the Dolphins salary cap.
Harrington replaced injured Daunte Culpepper and had 5-6 as a starter last year. However, Harrington was dropped in the final game for Cleo Lemon, who is all set to become the team’s backup in 2007 provided he does not get the starting position in the training camp.
