Dime Bettor

Definition
The term “dime bettor” refers to a person whose unit is equal to $1000 or more. In sports gambling terms, a ‘dime’ is another term for $1000. Dime bettors are of two types: those who are ‘sharp’ and those who are just rich.
The ‘sharp’ bettor
The sharp bettor is the most feared sports gambler by the sportsbooks. This type of person does extensive analysis before he/she makes a bet and does not merely play on a whim. A sharp is a professional gambler who uses great money management skills to maintain his/her big bankroll.
The rich bettor
The rich bettor is simply just rich. He/she plays big because he/she can. This is the type of bettor that sportsbooks love. The rich bettor rarely does any handicapping and just gambles for fun. He/she may not have any rhyme or reason as to which plays he/she may play. In all, this type of gambler is just part of the ‘public money’.
Can a dime bettor move a line?
Usually, sportsbooks have a limit as to when they will move a line. There would have to be a considerable amount of money to move a line, but a dime bet may move the juice at some online sportsbooks. Since these internet sportsbooks always fear from being exposed on any one game, they try to balance the action by offering a more attractive line/juice for the other side.
Where can dime bettors place their bets?
Most Las Vegas casinos have very high limits to cater to big money gamblers, as do many online sportsbooks. Some online sportsbooks, such as www.pinnaclesports.com and www.thegreek.com, have limits up to $100,000 on football and basketball games (both college and professional), while others require the gambler to call their bets in.
If the dime bettor decides to play in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, many sportsbooks give comps to high rollers and thus is another incentive to play on land-based sportsbooks.
A word of caution to dime bettors.
Some unreputable sportsbooks fear winning dime bettors. These small scale books usually limit a dime bettor’s action if they are winning too much, so the authors recommends that the dime bettor thoroughly research any online sportsbooks before he/she decides to deposit their bankroll into any online sportsbook.
Summary
In conclusion, a dime bettor is one who bets $1000 or more. Such a player is often regarded as a sharp or simply as being rich. Some online sportsbooks limit the amount of action a player gets if such a player wins too much money. Land-based sportsbooks also offers the dime bettor multiple comps if he/she continues to play at the same casino (comps can be anything from a free room at the casino hotel, free dinner, a free show, etc.)
