By Michael Williams (2/9/2007)
Ross Verba, Detroit Lions’ guard, has been arrested on a felony warrant for writing bad checks in Nevada.
Verba was arrested by a state trooper after pulling over a vehicle for speeding on Interstate 94. Verba was a passenger in the vehicle.
According to Capt Doug Notbohm, commander of the Wisconsin State Patrol in Eau Claire, Verba was extremely cooperative throughout the process. The arresting officer recognized his name and Verba had voluntarily identified himself as an NFL football player. The state trooper then discovered that there was a felony arrest warrant out on Verba from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the bad check unit of Clark County, Nevada, district attorney’s office.
Verba spent the night in jail and was released the following day after Nevada authorities lifted the warrant on him. According to Capt Doug Notbohm, who was given to understand, Verba had managed to resolve the misunderstanding regarding an outstanding debt in an establishment in Las Vegas.
Verba could not be reached for a comment as the telephone to his Minneapolis residence was disconnected.
Verba was the Packers’ first round pick in the 1997 draft. He started as left tackle. After playing four seasons with the Packers, Verba went to play four seasons for the Cleveland Browns. However, the relationship with Browns soured and he paid back $465,000 roster bonus to get his release in 2005.
It is understood that Verba had wanted to the same amount of money as Orlando Pace of St Louis and Walter Jones of Seattle. They make $7.5 million per season. However, Verba did not play in 2005 and then signed a one year deal with Detroit with club option for 2007.
Verba started seven this year till a groin injury sustained during a game with Vikings ended his playing season.
