Cowboys May Offer Ron Rivera Coaching Position
By Michael Williams (3/8/2007)
It looks like Ron Rivera, Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator, might be getting a job offer from the Dallas Cowboys to become the team’s coach.
In the last two seasons Rivera has been interviewed for many head coaching positions and it looks this time he might get the job where he would be replacing Bill Parcell.
However, Rivera insists that he has not spoken to anyone from Dallas and that he only found out on January 31, 2007 after his wife called him and informed him about the report on ESPN.com. The report stated that Norv Turner, who is the leading candidate to take over Bill Parcell’s position, informed Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner, that if he became the head coach, he wanted Ron Rivera as his defensive coordinator.
Last year, Rivera was a contender for head coaching position with the Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Rams. While this season, he was a candidate for the head coaching position with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals and Atlanta Falcons.
When asked whether he would be joining the Cowboys as offensive coordinator, Rivera said that he just wanted to concentrate on the Super Bowl for the moment and at the moment he was feeling slightly frustrated since no one is giving him any indication whether Dallas want him or not. However, he did say that he would take it in his stride if an offer was made to him
Coaches of teams in a game are usually off limits till the Super Bowl is over and in this case, Dallas can approach Rivera only on February 5, 2007. The Chicago Bears will be playing the Indianapolis Colts on February 4, 2007 in the Super Bowl. While Jerry Jones has already announced that the Dallas Cowboys would be naming Bill Parcell’s replacement only after the Super Bowl.
