College Basketball Teams
By Kris Lazaro (2/26/2007)
College athletes are not professional athletes. They often are still in their teens and have not developed the maturity associated with playing well on the road. As such, the astute handicapper can take advantage of such situations and profit from these situations.
A developing college basketball team has several qualities in common with each other. They are usually very good at home and horrendous on the road. Although most teams are not this extreme, three are a few in the smaller conference schools that exhibit this behavior. An explanation as to why such situations exist can be explained by the confidence factor. Young college kids literally feel at home in their home court, but as soon as they travel, all that confidence dissipates. Good coaches are those that teach their players how to handle stress and play on the road. A sense of fear also envelops those on the road. Imagine walking into Cameron Indoor at Duke, or the hallowed halls of Indiana University.
It is easy to lose one’s self in these environments. As players, these student-athletes often lose themselves and get engulfed in the home town college atmosphere.
A assign of a mature and confident college basketball team is, then, a winning record on the road. Not surprisingly, teams who have a winning road percentage record also reach the post-season more frequently than those teams that have losing road records.
In the NBA (National Basketball Association), there is not an apparent home-road dichotomy, but the discrepancy yet exists. These teams often have younger players and have yet to develop a killer instinct on the road.
In conclusion, young, inexperienced college teams often loose the majority of their road games, while maintaining their rule in their home court. As a sports bettor, one must be able to recognize such situations and bet accordingly.
