Chris Webber To Join Detroit Pistons
By Michael Williams (2/20/2007)
Chris Webber is all set to sign up with Detroit Pistons. He will be returning to the arena where he starred in college and then ended up tarnishing his image in a booster scandal. Webber is a five time All Star.
Webber was waived by the Philadephia 76ers and as a result be now becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Webber stated that by joining the Pistons, he will not get an opportunity to play the game he love in his hometown, which is Detroit, surrounded by his family. Webber attended the Pistons game against Minnesota Timberwolves along with father Mayce at The Palace. He was greeted by a standing ovation in the first quarter of the game.
Webber was born in Detroit and was one of the country’s most outstanding college player at Michigan. He was the number one pick overall in the 1993 draft. However, his accomplishments were over overshadowed by his ties to a booster and it resulted in federal charges against him and with NCAA sanctions against the university.
This 6 foot 10 player will start at the center next to Rasheed Wallace when Webber starts playing. Pistons have the second best record in the Eastern Conference and are the first team since early 1990s to advance to four conference championships.
Webber has career averages of 21.4 points and 10 rebounds and he was one of the NBA's top players. In 2001, Sacramento signed him up for seven year contract worth $123 million.
The 76ers let Webber go by buying out the final 11/2 years of his contract which would have seen him make $21 million this season and $22 million in the next.
