Celtics Radio Analyst, Cedric Maxwell, Apologizes For Sexist Remarks
By Michael Williams (3/19/2007)
Boston Celtics radio analyst Cedric Maxwell was forced to apologize for his sexist remarks about a female referee. He had passed a comment on the female referee after he disagreed with a call she had made. Maxwell said that the referee should go back to the kitchen.
The comment was made by Maxwell during the game between Celtics and Houston Rockets which the Celtics won 77-72. His comment verbatim to Violet Palmer, the female referee was: Go in there and make me some bacon and eggs.
Before the Celtics played their next game which was against New York Knicks, Maxwell said on WEEI-AM that he apologized if his comments came across as insensitive or sexist. He further said that Palmer had worked very hard to get where she now and he did not mean for his comment to come across the way it did. WEEI-AM is owned by Entercom Communications.
After Maxwell made his apology, his co-announcer Sean Grande said that the duo had no intentions of changing the way they did the show. Grande said that Maxwell and he had no intentions of changing their style of doing commentary just because certain media group represent comments for their own gain.
Entercom’s vice president of AM programming and operations in Boston, Jason Wolfe, said that the station did not appreciate Maxwell’s comments and thought it was an extremely poor attempt at humor. Entercom Communications owns WEEI and WRKO-AM. Usually Celtics’ games are broadcasted on WRKO-AM.
Maxwell is a former Celtics player and when they won the finals in 1981, Maxwell was the MVP. Celtics retired his number in 2003.
