Broncos’ Coach Brewster Joins Gophers
By Michael Williams (2/19/2007)
Denver Broncos tight ends coach Tim Brewster is all set to become the head coach at Minnesota Gophers. Brewster will be replacing Glen Mason who was fired. The university mentioned this in a press conference held on January 17, 2007. However, the players were informed about it in advance, January 16, 2007.
Brewster is 46 years old and has been with the Broncos the last two seasons. He joined the Broncos after spending three years as a tight ends coach with San Diego Chargers. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Texas and North Carolina.
Glen Mason was fired on December 31, 2006 after Texas Tech made the biggest comeback in major college bowl. Texas Tech came from a 38-7 deficit to win the Insight Bowl against Minnesota with a 44-41 victory. Gophers decided to hire Mason in 1997 when they were at the bottom of the Big Ten. They selected Mason since he had already proven his capabilities at Kent State and Kansas.
However, Brewster has not been a head coach at collegiate or professional level. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Purdue in 1986 and then went on to become the head coach for 2 seasons at Central Catholic High School in Lafayette, Indiana. After this, Brewster spent 9 years as a tight ends coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina. He then went to Texas and stayed there from 1998 to 2001.
During his at Texas, he helped the Longhorns become the top recruiting team in the country. Brewster is considered to be a master recruiter and now Gophers will be wanting his to do a sales pitch for the university. Minnesota is set to open an on-campus football stadium in 2009 and still needs to raise a lot of money for the stadium.
