Bonds and his Salary
By Michael Williams (7/26/2006)
For a player the caliber of Barry Bonds, it is
safe to say that he is going to demand a very large salary. After all, he is
second on the all time career home run list, and there is a very good chance
that he is going to become number one on the list after another season or two.
All of this translates into money, and Bonds surely gets a lot of it.
In 2002, Bonds re signed with the Giants for a contract of five years that is
estimated to be worth approximately $90 million. This translates into $18
million dollars a year. His salary is second highest among all Major League
Baseball players. Alex Rodriguez is the only player that is earning more money,
and he is raking in about $25.2 million per year.
For the 2006 season, Bonds will earn approximately $20 million. This is fourth
highest in the league, and the highest among any player that is not with the New
York Yankees organization. In addition to his $20 million salary, Bonds also has
performance bonuses that are worked into his contract. If he meets these he can
very easily end up making much more money.
