Bobby Cox Might Retire After Two More Years
By Michael Williams (4/3/2007)
Bobby Cox is already thinking about retirement though he has not made a decision as yet. However, Cox, Atlanta Braves’ manager, said that he would most probably retire after playing two more seasons.
Cox will be 66 years old in May 2007 and has been the Braves’ manager since he took over midway through the 1990 season. The following year, Cox guided Atlanta from being one of the worst teams in baseball to winning 14 consecutive division titles.
Cox has a career record of 2,171-1,686. He is the fifth winningest manager in the history of baseball and is behind just Connie Mack, John McGraw, Tony La Russa and Sparky Anderson. Mack McGraw and Anderson have been inducted into the Hall of Fame while La Russa is St Louis Cardinals’ manager.
Cox said that he still loves the game but is weighing other options. He stressed that he has not made up his mind to leave baseball after the end of 2008 season. He said that if he makes up his mind to retire, he would do it even if the team performs extremely well.
Along with John Schuerholz, Cox has managed to form one of the most successful clubs in the history of baseball. Schuerholz is 66 years old and he came to the Braves from Kansas City in 1991. He took over the duties of general manager from Cox and has been the general manager ever since. Schuerholz said that he knows when he would retire but has refused to make his plans public at this moment.
Most believe that Cox and Schuerholz would retire together. However, Cox insists that would not be the case as he does not know what Schuerholz’s plans are nor does Schuerholz know Cox’s plans.
