Bobby Abreu Of Yankees Out Because Of Strain
By Michael Williams (4/2/2007)
Yankees recently played their annual intrasquad game and Bobby Abreu spent his time on the sidelines watching the game. Bobby, who is 32 years old, is an outfielder for the Yankees.
A few days before the intrasquad game, Abreu strained his right oblique muscle while taking batting practice. This strain means that Abreu would out of action for two to three weeks, depending on how the strain gets better.
Abreu said that when the strain occurred it was extremely painful. He said that when he was taking batting practice he felt a twinge but did not pay too much attention. However, as he continued, he felt the pain increase. Now all that Abreu has to do is let the muscle rest and allow the soreness and the pain to gradually disappear.
Last season Abreu played for the Phillies and Yankees and had an average of .297 with 15 home runs and 107 RBIs. He has been touted as the Yankees starting right fielder.
Abreu is scheduled to return to the field by mid March. Abreu said that the injury was healing quickly and it could take as little as 10 days. This is good news for the Yankees as it means that Abreu would be available for the Yankees regular season first game which is on April 2, 2007.
For the moment, Abreu is getting the right treatment for the strain and he thinks it will not be long before he would be ready for the season. Joe Torre, Yankees’ manager, said that for the time being Abreu is going through basic cardiovascular exercises and because of the strain, he is not allowed to throw or bat.
