An introduction to betting on boxing
By Carl Winston (6/13/2005)
Boxing has been around as long as sport itself. From the 18th- and early 19th-century pugilism (bare knuckle fighting) evolved what we today call professional boxing. There are a number of different weight classes and wagering is accepted on most bouts around the globe. The different classes range from straw weight to heavy weight.
- Strawweight - up to 105 lb (47,6 kg)
- Junior Flyweight - 105 to 108 lb (49 kg)
- Flyweight - 108 to 112 lb (51 kg)
- Super Flyweight / Junior Bantam Weight - 112 to 115 lb (52,1 kg)
- Bantamweight - 115 to 118 lb (53,5 kg)
- Super Bantamweight / Junior Featherweight - 118 to 122 lb (55,3 kg)
- Featherweight - 122 to 126 lb (57,1 kg)
- Super Featherweight / Junior Lightweight - 126 to 130 lb (59 kg)
- Lightweight - 130 to 135 lb (61,2 kg)
- Super Lightweight / Junior Welterweight - 135 to 140 lb (63,5 kg)
- Welterweight - 140 to 147 lb (66,7 kg)
- Super Welterweight / Junior Middleweight - 147 to 154 lb (70 kg)
- Middleweight - 154 to 160 lb (72,5 kg)
- Super Middleweight - 160 to 168 lb (76,2 kg)
- Light Heavyweight - 168 to 175 lb (79 kg)
- Cruiserweight - 175 to 200 lb (91 kg)
- Heavyweight - over 200 lb (over 91 kg)
Money line bets
When placing a bet on the money line, the boxer must be the official winner for you to win the bet. It does not matter how he wins. Say for example that you place a bet on boxer A – 350. This means you stake 350$ to win 100$. Betting on boxer B +480 means a 100$ wager would give 480$ in return.
Making a bet on the draw
In order for you to win such a bet the fight would have to go on the fight cards and be declared a draw by the judges. Disqualifications do not count as draws.
Total round bet
Total round bets are made in a over/under form and the bet will be won if the bout ends in the selected number of rounds regardless of which fighter wins the bout. The halfway point is given after 1 minute and 30 seconds of the fight. Thus, a bet placed on under 4½ rounds would be won if the bout is settled before or within the first 90 seconds of the fifth round.
