Betting Systems - Gambling Systems - Handicapping Systems
By Kris Lazaro (8/1/2006)
Definition/Background
Systems abound in sports gambling. With so many games a day, one
may lose one’s head if one does not follow some sort of system to direct his
plays. Betting systems are those systems that one follows to select particular
games to wager on, on any particular day. Some people use computer programs to
input data, and let the computer select plays for them. Some others use
historical trends/data to try to predict future outcomes. Even still, others
rely on a plethora of gambling systems to help them win money and hopefully
break more than even on any given day.
Streaks
Many professional sports bettors compile data
over the years to complement their handicapping. One of the main reasons why so
many people get into sports gambling is the mathematical component. There are
many streaks in sports, may it be winning or losing ones. Some systems rely on
these streaks.
Isolating Streaks
Like history, sport situations tend to repeat
itself. Some touts use this idea and sophisticated handicapping systems to come
up with plays that they sell to gamblers. For example, a tout may use a tagline
such as team X is 20-0 ATS on 1 days rest if they are coming of a double
digit win at home against a division rival to sell a pick. Such obscure
data surprisingly comes up frequently in the sports world. As stated earlier,
history tends to repeat itself, especially in sports. It is the job of the
professional handicapper to isolate these facts and bring forth the relevant
data to his customers.
Buying Picks
Some companies sell their own betting systems,
while others sell picks based on their systems. It is up to the gambler to
decide whether or not they want to use their head and handicap their own games
or rely on other people’s picks.
Buyer Beware
A word of caution to those who follow systems,
though—even with all the angles supporting one side, it is still gambling. Any
team can beat another if the situation is right. Do not solely rely on systems
to make money. Luck and money management is the key to surviving sports
gambling.
Summary
In summary,
betting systems are set up to direct plays for a gambler. One
may choose to either compile data on his own, buy others’ systems, or buy
system-based picks from a tout. One of the major enticing factors in sports
gambling is repetition; sports trends tend to repeat itself, and it is here
where systems are used extensively.
