Look For the Baseball Sandwich Game in the First Game of a Series
By Michael Williams (6/19/2006)
Teams tend to have trouble in the
first game of a meaningless series if they are in the middle of a sandwich. That
is, if their previous series was against a division rival and they are pitted to
go against a division rival in their next series.
Very few people factor this into their betting arsenal because of its lack
of visibility within the gambling community. But the handicapping community is
starting to catch on as people see baseball as a great sport to make money. We
advise everybody to take this opportunity to start betting on this system before
the sportsbooks adjust the lines against you.
The sandwich theory only applies to the first game of the series. It does NOT
apply to the other games. The reason for it is simple human psychology. Imagine
you are given an assignment to do and you were given 3 weeks to do it. Would you
try to get everything done the first week? Provided that there were no outside
factors, you would probably spread everything out across all three weeks.
Now what if you just completed a really hard 3 week project (synonymous with
playing a division rival) and had to start a simple project for 3 weeks. You
would feel burned out in finishing your first project so your performance will
suffer with your second project (at least initially). Chances are you would get
off to a slow start on your second project.
History actually suggests that our team within the sandwich series will actually
play better in the second and third games. Perhaps raising their intensity and
motivation in preparation for their upcoming division rivalry series. It could
also be a bounce-back situation in which they are trying to make up for their
horrible start to the season, much like having to finish up a project in 2 weeks
instead of 3.
