Arenas Vows To Score 50 Points Against Portland
By Michael Williams (3/1/2007)
Gilbert Arenas had recently claimed that his next game would be 50 point game but Washington Wizards are not commenting on it.
Coach Eddie Jordan refused to be drawn into this discussion and refused to comment on what Arenas had said. Jordan said that all he was worried about was how the team was going to perform.
While forward Caron Butler said that the team was not up for any distractions and they just wanted to play basketball and win the game. Guard DeShawn Stevenson was a bit more open about Arenas statement and hoped that Arenas did not get too excited while playing like he did during the game against the Lakers.
Arenas did not turn for the conference after the practice session and no one could question him about his latest entry on his nba.com blog. The entry was entitled Time To Get my 50 Points vs Portland.
Arenas has promised to score 50 points against the Trail Blazers. This is in retaliation to anyone who was instrumental in ensuring that he did not make it the US national team for the world championship last summer. Phoenix coach Mike D’Antoni and Portland coach Nate McMillan were the assistants on that team and Arena showed his anger towards D’Antoni when he scored 54 points against the Suns in December 2006.
Arenas had initially said that he would score 100 points over two games against D’Antoni’s and McMillan’s teams. He then changed track and apologized for being immature and said that Phoenix and Portland nothing to do with him not making it the US national team. He back tracked again and said that he would score big against the two teams and he also added that he would score 84 or 85 points against the Dukes he would play them. Coach Mike Krzyzewski, the Dukes’ coach, was the head coach of the US team.
He initially said he was going to score 100 points over two games against their respective teams. He later apologized, saying he had been "immature'' and that Phoenix and Portland had nothing to do with his failure to make the final Team USA roster. He later changed course again, saying he needed to score big against those teams because he couldn't take back his original prediction. Along the way, he also said he'd score "84 or 85'' points if he could play Duke, whose coach, Mike Krzyzewski, was the head coach of the U.S. team.
