Al Jefferson Wins Player Of The Weeks And Now Wants More
By Kris Lazaro (5/9/2007)
Just before Celtics coach Doc Rivers gave Al Jefferson the news that he had been selected as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Jefferson thought that the coach was calling him up to give him some bad news.
However, Jefferson missed his coach’s call and had to call him back to get the good news from him. Rivers congratulated him for the honor. Jefferson had scored 23.5 points with 14.5 rebounds.
Jefferson said that he was surprised to receive the award and now he is so motivated that he wants to work harder on his game.
With Jefferson winning the honor, it was proof enough for Rivers that players can deliver more than expected. This has been proven right with Jefferson. The Celts believed that Jefferson was a good player and he has shown them that he is better than good. Rivers said he was a better rebounder than he expected him to be. Above all, Rivers feels that Jefferson is in a good shape mentally and that has helped him to improve his game even further.
Although he has won the Player of the Week honor, Rivers does not think that the officials will now want to give Jefferson the calls the league’s top players seem to get. He said that they would wait to make sure that Jefferson is not a one game wonder.
However, Jefferson is already winning the trust of his teammates. Jefferson recalls how in his first to years with the Celts Paul Pierce always had the ball at the end of each quarter. However, in a recent game against New York, Pierce gave him the ball and that is when he found out the he had Pierce’s trust. Now he wants to work on keeping that trust.
