A No Contest Plea For Detroit Lions Assistant Coach
By Michael Williams (2/7/2007)
Detroit Lions assistant coach, Joe Cullen, was arrested two times in a period of one week. According to the police, the first arrest was made when he was driving nude and a week later he was arrested again for drunk driving. Joe Cullen entered a plea deal in these cases.
Cullen is Detroit Lions defensive line coach and he pleaded no contest before the 19th District Judge to the disorderly conduct and guilty to impaired driving charges. Cullen has been charged with indecent conduct and drunk driving.
A no contest plea is in no way an admission of guilt. Disorderly conduct is punishable by up to 90 days in jail while impaired driving is punishable by up to 93 days. Sentencing for Cullen has been set for February 13.
Last year, on August 24, Cullen was pulled over in a Detroit suburb and ticketed on suspicion of indecent and obscene conduct. Detroit Lions have confirmed that alcohol was involved in this incident. Again on September 1, Cullen was stopped and his blood alcohol content was 0.12 percent. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08 percent.
The Lions suspended Cullen for the first game. However, the NFL commissioner felt that the one game suspension was not enough. So, it was decided to suspend Cullen for another game and fine him $20,000. This suspension was on the grounds of conduct detrimental to the league.
In 2005, Cullen was dismissed from the University of Mississippi after he was arrested on an alcohol related incident at a restaurant.
