By Michael Williams (3/6/2007)
Maryland Nighthawks of the American Basketball Associated have a new player in their team and they are saying that he is the tallest player in the history of professional basketball. They might be true in that regard.
Sun Ming Ming is 7 foot 9 and he weighs 370 pounds. He is from China and he is a young 23 year old who has traversed the ocean to play professional basketball in the US, with the hope that he makes it to NBA someday.
Maryland Nighthawks’ owner, coach and teammates just could not stop talking about Sun Ming’s basketball prowess. The kept praising his knowledge about basketball and how well he handles the ball.
Sun Ming will a jersey with number 79 which represents his height. However, Sun Ming was not happy with the XXXXXXL sweat shirt that the team gave him because it was too small for him.
American Basketball Association’s chief operating officer, Tom Doyle, felt that Sun Ming would be able to make it to the NBA someday. It really remains to be seen whether Doyle’s opinion comes to past. Sun Ming last played basketball over six months ago when he played briefly for the Dodge City Legend who are part of the United States Basketball League.
NBA’s director of scouting, Marty Blake, said that NBA would monitor Sun Ming’s progress now. Apparently, Sun Ming’s name had come up before but the NBA could not judge his playing ability. Blake went on to say that NBA has always been interested in talent players immaterial which part of the world they come from, especially if they are 7 feet 9 inches.
In China, Sun Ming played for a second division team and he moved to California 1 1/2 years ago with the hopes of making it to professional basketball. However, last he underwent two surgeries for a pituitary tumor. Sun Ming says that the operations were successful and he is in the process of getting back into shape.
