31 Year Old Named Raiders Head Coach
By Michael Williams (3/5/2007)
It was an overwhelming moment for Lane Kiffin when he was announced as the new head coach for Oakland Raiders. The Raiders started looking for a new head coach after Art Shell was fired after an extremely disappointing season.
31 year old Kiffin, who was the offensive coordinator at University of Southern California, has the unique distinction of becoming the youngest head coach in the National Football League.
Earlier, Raiders had approached Steve Sarkisian to take over the mantle of head coach. Sarkisian is also an assistant coach at University of Southern California. Sarkisian was interviewed two times for the position but he decided to continue his job with the USC and the deal fell through. After that, Kiffin was interviewed as a second option and later the Raiders confirmed with his appointment.
Raiders still claim that the position was never offered to Sarkisian and Sarkisian too confirms this.
Oakland Raiders have finished the season at the bottom of the league. They had the worst record this season in the entire NFL, going for 2-14. One of the reasons for this is that Raiders have changed their coaches four times in four years. Kiffin is their 16th head coach.
Raiders have one of the best defenses in the entire league but their offense is considered to be amongst the worst. Kiffin, who played as a quarterback for Fresno State University, is younger than at least nine players on the team but might prove effective because of his experience as a offensive coordinator.
